Formula with a worked example

risers = ceil(totalRise / maxRiserHeight)
actualRiserHeight = totalRise / risers
treads = risers − 1
totalRun = treads × treadDepth
stringerLength = √(totalRise² + totalRun²)

For a 36 in total rise with a 10.5 in tread depth and the default 7-3/4 in maximum riser height:

risers = ceil(36 / 7.75) = 5
actualRiserHeight = 36 / 5 = 7.2 in
treads = 5 − 1 = 4
totalRun = 4 × 10.5 = 42 in
stringerLength = √(36² + 42²) ≈ 55.3 in

Planning tips

  • Keep riser heights equal — IRC R311.7.5.1 limits the variation between the largest and smallest riser in a flight, commonly to 3/8 in. This tool always produces equal risers by design.
  • A deeper tread depth needs fewer risers for the same rise, which changes the total run and how far the stair extends from the deck.
  • Order stringer stock longer than the theoretical length shown here to allow for the notched cuts.

Common mistakes

  • Forgetting that the top tread is the deck surface itself, and off-by-one counting treads.
  • Measuring rise from the wrong reference point (e.g. the ground instead of the finished lower landing).
  • Assuming a single national riser/tread limit — many jurisdictions amend the IRC defaults.
  • Treating the theoretical stringer length as the lumber cut length.
